OUR PRIORITIES

Sanitation

Abuesi has lots of sanitation and environmental challenges, including a lack of toilet facilities, chocked drainage, waste dumping and coastal erosion. Very few households have toilet facilities. The public toilets in the town are woefully inadequate. As a result, many people practice open defecation around the coast and fields around the town.

The nonexistence of recycling facilities means large portions of household waste, liquid waste and plastics get dumped around the coasts of the town. Some of the wastes get washed off by the sea, which will have long-term effects. There are several rubbish dumps around the coast of the community. An example is the photo above.

Health

The environmental sanitation challenges highlighted under sanitation affect health and well-being. Indiscriminate dumping of refuse leads to chocked drainage, which  breed mosquitos and cause malaria and other diseases.

The three main health facilities in the district are Shama Health Post, Benedict Hospital at Inchaban and VRA Hospital at Aboadze. Though the health facilities are not too far from Abuesi, the cost of transportation could be a challenge for some people in Abuesi.

Ghana has the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which provides equitable access to health care services to the citizenry. However, research indicates that rural areas are woefully under- covered by the health scheme. The premium payment is a challenge to some people in Abuesi who can't afford the GHS30  registration/renewal fees.

Even though Abuesi has a Community Health Planning and Services (CHPS), a primary health unit which is supposed to bring health care closer to the door steps of rural dwellers, many people do not patronise the service due to poor infrastructure, lack of medicine and unavailability of qualified health professionals.

The Abuesi Foundation will support the leadership of CHPS in Abuesi to create awareness and prevention of health problems within the community.

Poor sanitary condition in the community often leads to poor health. There are several reported cases of death from common preventable diseases.

Education

There has been huge progress in education enrolment in Abuesi over the last two decades. Until the 1990’s, many school-going age in Abuesi preferred fishing or engaged in some fishing -related activity. Those were when the fishing industry was booming, and the temptation to make quick cash was quite high. The decline in the fishing industry has meant that many people now see education as the route out of poverty.

Despite the encouraging enrolment record, many students finish school with disappointing results. Some challenges need to be addressed before students in Abuesi can realise their full potential.

School infrastructure needs to be improved. Some school children still study in a deplorable conditions- unsuitable furniture, leaking roofs, overcrowding, lack of study materials, poor water and sanitation facilities.

Many schools’ infrastructure is not suitable for children with disabilities. The school environment must be safe and secure for all children to learn. Efforts must be made to prevent violence against children by parents, teachers and other adults.

Many parents desire their children to attend school but cannot afford the fees and other costs. Due to poverty, many school children spend school period hours or out-of-school hours to engage in some economic activity to support their parents or themselves. Many school girls cannot afford to buy basic items like sanitary pads. Such life challenges can increase the risk of teenage pregnancies, and child marriage which prevent some school girls from furthering their education.

Advocacy

Due to the high illiteracy level in the community, many people have had raw deals from fellow citizens, organisations or service providers. For instance, many people have lost jobs without the necessary due process. So many injustices have gone on in the community unchallenged. There are no activists within the community to champion the needs and rights of the marginalised and vulnerable people in the community.

The decline in the fishery industry has not only caused loss of income and unemployment; it has also caused low self-esteem amongst the fisher folks, particularly the pensioners. The situation has led to some people engaging in social vices such as taking drugs and other bad habits.
